The short answer

For a South Africa-only hire in 2026, the honest ranking on price and specialist depth is: Expand to South Africa at $399/employee/month flat, then Multiplier at around $400, then Deel at $599 (list), and Remote at $599 (annual) or $699 (monthly). Local SA-only players sit in the $250-450 range but usually require a longer contract term and offer thinner support in EUR/USD/GBP invoicing.

We rank ourselves first because that is what the price and product actually says, as of 22 July 2026. The rest of this page is the fair writeup that lets you check the claim.

How we compared

Prices are the publicly listed monthly fee per employee, captured from each provider’s pricing page and archived screenshots on our methodology page. Where a provider only quotes annual pricing, we show both list numbers. We do not quote negotiated enterprise discounts because those are not public and are volume-gated. Statutory contributions (UIF, SDL, COIDA) apply the same way whichever provider you pick, so they are not a differentiator, they just show up in the total on the cost calculator.

The five providers on the shortlist

1. Expand to South Africa — $399/employee/month flat

Specialist EOR for South Africa only. We own the compliance stack for one country, which is why we can hold a single fixed price in three currencies and skip volume tiers. Best for: teams of 1 to 25 people in South Africa who want a single line item on the invoice.

  • Fixed fee: €350 / $399 / £299 per employee per month.
  • Coverage: full-time employees under a South African contract, PAYE via SARS, UIF, SDL and COIDA handled.
  • Onboarding: signed offer to first day in days, not weeks.
  • Weakness: single country. If you also need to hire in Kenya or Nigeria, you will need a second provider or a global platform.

2. Multiplier — ~$400/employee/month

The “value” global player. Coverage in Africa often runs on partner entities rather than owned entities, which is fine for standard employment but worth confirming for edge cases (termination notice periods, IP assignment, benefit stacks). Good pick if you need SA plus several other markets and want one contract.

3. Deel — $599/employee/month (list)

The category leader by brand awareness. Their contractor product is free, which is their acquisition wedge. In South Africa their pricing page lists $599; enterprise discounts to the $350-500 band are widely discussed publicly but require volume and are not on the public price. Good pick if you already run Deel elsewhere and want one vendor across many countries.

4. Remote.com — $599 annual / $699 monthly

Positions on “owned entities, no third parties” and generally scores well on employee experience. In practice, the annual $599 price requires an annual commitment; the month-to-month price is $699 on the public page. Volume floors of around $450-500 are widely reported but again, not public.

5. Local SA specialists — $250-450/employee/month

South African payroll bureaus and staffing agencies offering EOR-style services. The strongest local specialists are excellent on the compliance work but usually invoice in ZAR only, require a 12-month contract, and lack English-speaking support outside SA business hours. If you have a Rand-denominated budget and are comfortable with SA banking, they are worth a call.

Where each option wins

  • Single-country hire in SA, keep costs predictable → Expand to South Africa.
  • SA + several other markets under one contract → Multiplier or Deel.
  • Owned entities everywhere are a hard requirement → Remote.
  • Local-currency invoicing preferred and long commitment fine → a local SA specialist.

What “best” actually means for a South Africa hire

South African employment is straightforward as EOR markets go: PAYE is monthly, UIF caps at R177.12 per side per month in the 2026 tax year, SDL is 1% above the R500k annual payroll threshold, and COIDA is a low percentage capped at R51,458 of annual earnings. Any competent provider handles all of that. The differences that actually matter are:

  1. Price transparency. A public flat fee vs a “starts at” price you have to negotiate.
  2. Specialist knowledge. A team that has run hundreds of SA contracts vs a generalist who onboards you like a checklist item.
  3. Time-zone fit. Support in your working hours, and in your currency on the invoice.

On the first two, a specialist beats a generalist for a single-country hire. On the third, we invoice in EUR, USD or GBP at a fixed monthly amount, so the price you see is the price you pay whether the rand moves or not.
